Hitachi introduces D-VHS-compatible DSS system

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1997--Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc., a subsidiary of Hitachi America, Ltd., announced today that it will introduce the new Ultravision HDSS220S D-VHS-compatible DSS(a) system at the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association show in Las Vegas.

Hitachi's new DSS system incorporates a digital interface comprising a simplified digital audio/video bus and proprietary software that allows for digital bit stream recording and 2-way communication with Hitachi's new Ultravision D-VHS VCR.

By recording the digital bit stream directly to video tape, and playing it back through the new DSS system for decoding the MPEG signal, a recording with virtually no picture quality degradation from the original is possible. The digital recording offers the very best in picture quality and CD quality audio. The 2-way communication through the digital interface also provides such additional features as Virtual Keypad that appears on screen providing the user an easily understood control panel for the D-VHS VCR.

The Ultravision HDS220S also features a dual LNB for multi-room applications, a new RF remote control, one-touch record (A Starsight(b) feature), and a new unique highly intuitive OSD with such features as Hitachi's Colorized Guide, Browse Banner, QuickTune and AlphaTune. The HDS220S also supports the Copy Guard Management System Digital (CGMS-D) specifications for anti copy control.

Both the Ultravision VTDX815A and the HDS220S are scheduled to be released to dealers in the third quarter of 1997.
