Seems to me if that is what was indeed was going through his mind, and I must say I suspect you are correct, then why, since he had opted for this alternative in the past, did he chose to fly without a more experienced co-pilot, especially where he had broken his leg over Memorial Day and had just had just had the hard cast removed and replaced with an air cast?

I don't know..frankly hindsight is always 20/20. Are you a pilot? If so, have you encountered the sort of thing they talk about as probably having had happen-where you lose your view of the horizon and get disoriented?
