Bill,

I'm pretty sure the shortcut she's talking about is going to be in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and it's called MS-DOS Prompt.

Just right-click it, select Properties, pick the Program tab and hit the Advanced button. Then check the MS-DOS mode button. Close that sheet and on your way out check the Close on exit button (which should be already checked anyway.)

Then, while you still have the folder open double-click the MS-DOS Prompt icon which will try to restart you in dos mode just like using the shutdown button on the start menu.

My guess is that you will still get the lock-up.

PW, have I said anything wrong? If he does get the lockup what's next?
