ed - just look at this (put MSFT in the ticker box):
thomsoninvest.net
If you noticed, the super sell messages (very large institutional orders) crossed the price line of MSFT throughout the day (means they actually got executed - whether for the full amount of their orders or not, is debatable, and I wrote post #26503 exploring this) - however, you'll notice that *indisputably* the majority of them crossed. Further, notice that the super buy orders, not only were smaller, but most of the time were below the price line (so did not get executed). And notice that by volume (bar graphs below) institutional sells were much higher than buys. You refer to volume. Look at the pie chart - almost 2/3 of that volume is institutions.
This is just one way to tell. Go to other sites that also break down the volume on institutional/retail trading by block size. Finally, if you watch it on LII, and you see major axes like GSCO, MLCO etc., sell, but not buy on anywhere near the volume, you know they are selling (which you can also see by big sell blocks on the T&S).
Do your homework - the data is there for all to see. You ask me questions which you can easily answer yourself even if you only type with your thumbs. No need to get snippy with me. I don't make claims without backing them up - I leave that to you. Do some work yourself. And I've cited the grounds for my observations in several posts - so before you spit-spray, do some reading.
