DOS stuff ...

Each DOS shortcut is independent. All a DOS shortcut does is cause Windows to examine a .PIF (Program Information File) and execute COMMAND.COM using the given settings. You could have dozens, each one different. You DID click the one you changed?

Press CTRL ALT DEL keys and look in the Close Program box for any unusual programs running in the background. If you see anything looking out of place, stop it. Don't stop explorer though. Eventually you'll stop everything. Some things may take a moment to stop, so don't be in a hurry. You're looking for things which bring up a 'NOT RESPONDING' window. I don't have much faith in this, but it's easy to try so I recommend doing it first.

If the Ctrl-Alt-Del stuff doesn't find what's not cooperating, we'll need to do a 'special boot.' First, restart Windows in 'Safe Mode' by holding down the Ctrl key during reboot and picking Safe Mode from the menu. From Safe Mode, try to restart in MS-DOS mode. If it doesn't work from here, we're in deep trouble.

If Safe Mode MS-DOS restart works, then try the line-by-line booting until you can MSDR (MS-DOS Restart) with all lines active. Perhaps one of these Config lines are causing the trouble.

I'm assuming your system is OK. Click SystemTools / Information / Tools /System File Checker to be sure.

Next step is to Click SystemTools / Information / Configuration Utility and work through the tabs and uncheck boxes until you find the problem. There's lots of these to go through so this will take some time. It's easy work, but tedious: I left it to the end.

If you get this far and the problem isn't solved, post again.

Cheers, PW.
