Absolutely agree about poets. But when it comes to novels- subject and emphasis differences are very marked.

I find Moby Dick a very good book- especially if you want to have a field day with symbolism, but his prose can be muddy, the book could have been better edited, and I find his characters not very deep. Now for male writers- Trollope, Joseph Conrad, Henry James- are wonderful.

I think a very great novel must appeal to me. If it does not appeal to me on SOME level- who could it have been written for? I trust my own judgment completely in these matters and so should YOU. So i will put you down as a vote for Austen, whom you enjoy more than the manly Melville.
