There was a "private pilot" who took off alone a few mos ago from a town near me. He was an internationlly-known glass blower. Plane has not been seen since. No flight plan was filed, although it was assumed he was flying to his place in vermont.

Phoned-in leads led cops to search all over the place, a few different areas, nowhere near each other, confirming the fact that nobody had any idea where this guy was going, nor had any radar data confirmed any last flight pattern on the guy. He had 20 yrs flying experience.

IMO, you are more likely to be crashed down upon by someone like JFK Jr. or my glassblower, than you are to be struck by lightning. These "private pilots" go down all over the place, every week, and nobody cares.
