You mention Genet, bringing up the larger, different question, I think, of whether bad people can be good writers. They can, of course, but I am talking about something else-- that I don't see how civilized people learn anything about what they confront by reading made up sadistic fantasies. Although now that I think of it, I guess you could argue that any macabre fantasy shows human nature, by definition, since it's a human product.
