Some thoughts on the use of ethnic slang: Growing up with much ethnic diversity, I recall there was a lot of good-natured ribbing. We had Poles, Italians, French-Canadians, and Irish calling each other every slang word you could think of. It was mostly done in fun and everybody laughed. This rough humor was confined to these groups, though. That humor used on Jews or blacks would have been offensive. These nationalities had the common bond of being Catholic, so ethnic remarks were taken in the spirit that they were intended. Like it or not, there are tribal characteristics that are particular to us. I see nothing wrong with having a little self-deprecating joke now and then. Not long ago a friendly poke in the ribs to a person of a different ethnic origin would have been taken in the proper spirit. It seems today our culture is far too sensitive.
