Thank you for your honest and detailed post. I guessed you were a pilot. That is exactly what those of us trying to make sense of this situation needed to understand. That a) he should have had some training in reading instruments and in recovering from disorientation and b) that he probably did not seek proper medical authorization. Perhaps the injury hampered his ability to maneuver his way out of disorientation. We may never know. But whatever the mistake, and it appears to me at least that he did make a mistake, it cost three young lives.

Just out of curiosity, what is the sequence of pilot training? Do you have to pass a written exam before you're allowed on the plane?
