There are now conflicting reports. Some reporters say he did not drop at a normal rate of decent before falling off the radar, some day it was a quite normal rate of decent, some say he "fell off the radar" some say he dropped off the radar at the appropriate time one normally does drop off when coming in for final decent.

Either way it seems to me he only had a few seconds to understand that he was in trouble and was so close to the water at that point that if he did pull himself into a graveyard spin, he must have ended up under water very fast, and very deep, given the velocity and speed you must gain being in that sort of deadly pattern.
