There should be little doubt that Microsoft (MSFT) will at least meet the consensus estimate of $0.36 when they report earnings today after the bell. The consensus estimate was $0.35 a month ago when Microsoft suggested to analysts that they might want to raise their estimates. However, according to Drew Brosseau at SG Cowen, recent accounting changes by Microsoft will result in higher revenues but will not change the company's EPS numbers. That does not change the optimism for today's earnings report. Microsoft Word is the company's biggest revenue generator and Office 2000 sales are outpacing Office 97. Therefore, even though the top estimate is currently $0.37, the expectation is for Microsoft to hit our Earnings Whisper number of $0.38 – with some expecting a little more. Any downside is expected to be from the company's accounting changes.

You may listen to Microsoft's conference call at microsoft.com at 5:30 PM EST.
