Story from ABC News:

Microsoft's Next Monopoly - Interactive Television

abcnews.go.com

"Microsoft and Rogers TV, Canada's largest cable company, announced recently that they would provide nationwide interactive TV throughout Canada. As part of the deal, Rogers will use “MS TV client software” (sounds like WebTV to me) and Microsoft TV Server software in at least 1 million set-top boxes. Rogers will also feature Microsoft content, along with others."

Some points:

1) Microsoft does have an interactive client (although it may just be the old Web TV, or maybe it's something new or some improvement on Web TV).

2) Microsoft does have some server software

3) Microsoft is planning on producing content

This is primarily directed at the folks who said that Microsoft was only looking to get Win CE on every set top box and would stop there. Microsoft is a competitor to IATV. This is one of the reasons I think a near-term rollout is essential. If IATV is ready by Sep 16 I guess that's the most we can ask for from them, but I don't care whether it's Malone or BS who are making the final decisions, this puppy needs to roll out. If Malone stalls for 3-6 months, then IATV may get passed by. Perhaps IATV could seek out another major content deal with someone who is interested in releasing, oh, let's say, now?
