Maybe, but don't forget that GSM really does work very well. I use it daily for voice and text messaging. I often use it for data transmission. Some congestion does happen on those networks that have not built enough infrastructure, but the one I use (ORNGY) is almost never busy, even in central London. There are base stations every few hundred metres in some areas, sometimes inside large buildings to cope with very high traffic levels.

In rural areas, the line of sight range is around 20 miles for a hand portable cellphone (limited by the maximum available timing advance).

I am sure that CDMA is very good, maybe better than GSM. However, it would be unwise to think that CDMA will quickly sweep away something that is good enough for many countries.
