Interesting, the scientific community estimates that if 5% of the world's automobiles used PEM technology it would consume 30% of the world's supply of platinum. Another precious metal palladium is required to produce pure hydrogen. Also the misconception of a PEM system free of pollutants is false, the pollutants reduced are exhausted at the high temperature reformer that needs steam to work making the efficiency of a PEM 37%. PEM cells need to be moist all the time to work so the market would be limited (tested by freezing &thawing a PEM cell down to -40 deg C). Natural gas has a high ignition temperature thereby increasing the costs of materials and decreasing the life cycle of an ICE burning natural gas, however the SOFC built by Global Thermoelectric does not combust this type of gas. and doesn't use an ignition temperature.

Therefore Global Thermoelectric' SOFC technology will have up to 95% of the automobile manufacturer's market within 5 years no matter what because there is not enough platinum on this planet to supply the production of 40 million cars a year.

P.S. Most of the above data can be verified in the July 1999 issue of Scientific American (www.sciam.com)
