Installing Windows98 upgrade from Windows95 ...

I've never needed to do this. From reading posts from others, I've concluded that to load an 'upgrade' Win98, somewhere in the process, you get asked to insert your Win95 CD. Once Setup's satisfied you're really upgrading and not trying to pull a fast one, you'll be asked to re-insert the Win98 CD and you can proceed.

Insert the CD. You may need to click Start/Run and type Setup, or CD:Setup (Where CD is your CD drive letter, like F:Setup) Setup, seeing what you already have, will think you're nuts and ask you what you're trying to do. Pick from a menu of choices and your adventure begins.

Be sure you have your product ID handy, since you'll need to enter it during the installation. If you don't have it post me. I'll take a look at your system and tell you what it is.

I can't recommend trying to install an OEM Windows from another machine. My Brother-In-Law spent a week trying this and finally gave up. (It seems he values the $100 Microsoft wants for Windows more than a week of his time?) The Windows gremlins are very fussy about where they call home.

Do you have the Dell System CD for your machine? You'll need the stuff on this CD to upgrade Win98 for your specific hardware: Modem, Mouse, Video, Audio ...) The CD for my Dell is blue.

Cheerios, PW.

P.S. Someone posted the name of the file on your Win95 disk setup looks for, but I can't remember what it was, nor was I paying attention, because this didn't have anything to do with me at the time.

P.P.S. Just kidding about the Product ID! I can't look at your system: Really! I'll just post the instructions on how to locate it in your registry. (I originally MEANT to type "I'll take a look at MY system and tell you WHERE it is.", but I was distracted; however, I got a grin when I read what I'd typed, and I didn't want it changed. (I was thinking about the answer to "Where it is?" and all I could think of was "On my desk!" (I find the message easily misunderstood with this medium. (The 'IT' could refer as easily to my system as your Product ID.)))))

P.S. To all ---> Please! If my parenthesis aren't matched above, there's no need to point it out.
