Steve, My belief is that he was disoriented, lost control and slammed into the water fairly hard. It is quite possible in that scenario that they never even knew they were in trouble. On a dark hazy night, you wouldn't even see the surface of the water as it came up at you. One of my friends, 12,000 hour pilot, all of it in small planes, much of it in hard instrument conditions, nearly did this over the Gulf of Mexico. Pulled out of the sprial well below 1000' after descending close to 9000' without realizing it... mg
