Steve,

The landing gear is designed to take stress from a very specific angle. Hit them wrong (sideways, for example) and they can shear off pretty easily. Hard to say what kind of forces would dislodge it in a water crash.

That said, this aircraft has retractible landing gear, so the strut and wheel would have been folded into the wing unless he decided to lower them for some reason. On this aircraft there landing gear is still exposed when folded up, not completely covered by gear doors.
