I can understand your viewpoint. Because I do pick individual stocks myself (in "boring companies" like MCD, MO, ABT etc.). But I like to play the game both ways. I want my stock-picks to beat the pants off the indexes in the longer run. But, if for some reason it doesn't happen, I want a good part of my portfolio to at least match the market. And for a taxable account, I think there is no mutual fund like the Vanguard Total Stock Market fund...
