What Taulli seems clueless to is that while MP3 may well be "at the center of music on the Web", MP3.com (UNLIKE Liquid Audio) does not own ANY aspect of the mp3 technology standard. It only has the right to use the www.mp3.com *domain name*, and build a business (as ANYONE could) as an mp3 portal.

Liquid Audio on the other hand OWNS the proprietary Liquid Audio technology and related LA intellectual property.

There would be NOTHING to stop anyone from starting a web portal devoted to the mp3 compression format, EXACTLY as www.mp3.com has done.

The fact that MP3.com owns the url name may erroneously suggest to some an ownership/relationship of the current standardized audio compression format. It does NOT.

MP3.com is simply a portal devoted to the non-proprietary mp3 (MPEG 2, layer 3) compression format.
