New Release of Solaris Easy Acess Server Software Makes It Easy to Run
the Scalable, Reliable Solaris Operating Environment in Windows NT
Networks

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 1999-- Making it easy for network
administrators and line-of-business managers to offer Windows NT network services more
reliably and at a lower cost, Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) today announced
Solaris Easy Access Server 3.0 software for workgroups, departments and branch offices.

The new server software combines the proven reliability of the Solaris Operating Environment
with the ease-of-use familiar to Windows NT administrators, delivering a complete set of
Windows NT network services alongside comprehensive, reliable network services.

''Many organizations are consolidating the workload supported by several smaller systems and
putting it on one larger server,'' said Dan Kusnetzky, program director, International Data Corp.

''This allows them to lower their overall administration costs dramatically. By including Solaris
PC NetLink in its Solaris Easy Access Server software, Sun is providing organizations the tools
to facilitate this consolidation and deploy a Solaris server without changing their existing
infrastructure software or retraining their IT staff.''

''In order to '.com' their enterprises, companies today need the increased reliability of the Solaris
Operating Environment and the ability to streamline server management and administration by
consolidating servers,'' said Jeff Bernard, director of marketing, Solaris Software, Sun
Microsystems.

''Our customers that are familiar with NT networks can now easily experience the reliability,
scalability and availability of Solaris software and a server that seamlessly integrates into the
workgroup and department network.''

Solaris Easy Access Server 3.0 combines a complete set of Windows NT Network Services,
easy-to-use administration tools and global enterprise security services. It provides businesses
with the following benefits:

-0-

-- Ease and familiarity of installation, configuration,
administration
-- Interoperability with NT servers
-- Support for web standards
-- Simplified delivery of network services
-- Reduced total cost of ownership

Ease and Familiarity of Installation, Configuration and

Administration

Solaris Easy Access Server 3.0 provides new easy to use, comprehensive administration tools
for the installation of the Solaris operating environment and application software; configuration
of services on Solaris servers; and day-to-day operation of the network environment.

New tools include a popular Java(TM) technology-enabled Solstice AdminSuite(TM) 3.0 and
Solaris Web Start Wizards(TM)software.

Interoperability with NT Servers

Solaris PC NetLink 1.1 (previously known as Project Cascade), included in Solaris Easy Access
Server 3.0, provides for a higher availability of Windows NT network services and makes
Solaris servers look like Windows NT servers to end-users.

The new Solaris PC NetLink 1.1 technology enables Solaris servers to run native Windows NT
network services -- including BackOffice authentication, Windows NT file services and
Windows NT Directory services -- administrators can use the same, unchanged tools to
administer these services.

''With our Intel-based WorldMark Servers, companies can deploy Solaris Easy Access Server
without changing their existing network infrastructure or retraining their IT staff,'' said Marty
Seyer, Vice President and General Manager, Customer Interaction Solutions, NCR Corp.

''By integrating Solaris PC NetLink software, Solaris Easy Access Server provides an easy way
for our customers to deliver more reliable Windows NT network services and reduce the number
of servers in workgroups, departments and branch offices.''

Support for Web Standards

Solaris Easy Access Server supports the emerging WBEM (Web-Based Enterprise Management)
standards as defined by the DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force). Developers can
download the Solaris WBEM SDK (http://sun.com/solaris/wbem) and immediately start
developing applications to take advantage of the Sun WBEM Services.

Integrating the Sun WBEM Services in Solaris Easy Access Server makes it easier for the
Solaris Operating Environment to be managed in heterogeneous networks.

Additionally, the inclusion of a standards-based approach to user authentication (Sun Enterprise
Authentication Mechanism(TM) software) in Solaris Easy Access Server software allows
organizations to achieve a higher level of cross-platform interoperability for security and
authentication services.

Simplified Delivery of Network Services

Sun WebServer(TM), Sun Internet Mail Server(TM), Sun Directory Services and Kerberos v.5
security services are included in Solaris Easy Access Server to provide scalable and reliable
network services across the enterprise.

Reduced Total Cost of Ownership

Solaris Easy Access Server reduces the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of buying and managing
workgroup and departmental servers by:

-0-

-- Consolidating multiple Windows NT servers into one highly
scalable Sun servers with the Solaris Operating Environment
-- Centralizing server administration to eliminate the need for a
team of Windows NT specialists
-- Freeing precious resources for more advanced IT projects
-- Reducing server failure
-- Supporting remote management

The Solaris Operating Environment

The Solaris 7 Operating Environment is reliable, highly scalable, Year 2000 compliant, and
delivers expanded capabilities for workgroups, data centers, and Internet Service Providers who
need ''any time, anywhere'' access to computing resources. The Solaris 7 product line is the
bestnetwork computing environment to support the business demands of today and the business
innovations for tomorrow.

Solaris 7 features a 64-bit environment, mainframe-class reliability features, Windows NT
interoperability, easier installation, administration and configuration. Solaris 7 provides binary
compatibility with all Solaris 2.x releases and maintains compatibility with SPARC(TM) and
Intel processors.

Pricing and Availability

The Solaris Easy Access Server is currently scheduled to be available in August for both the
Solaris 2.6 and 7 operating environments on the SPARC and Intel architectures. The base
manufacturer's suggested retail price starts at US$595 per server.

Existing Solaris Easy Access Server customers under maintenance contract will automatically
receive a free upgrade of the software. For international pricing and availability, contact local
