Sensitivity I can handle. What I don't like is when people are 'sensitive' on behalf of others.

I grew up using the term "oriental" meaning anyone or anything from Asia. It was not negative when used by me or by anyone I knew. I remember the day I was informed that "oriental" was no longer correct, it was now an insult. The correct term was Asian. The person who correct me was offended by my misuse of the term. I still don't understand what offended him because he was not Asian. There was no basis for him to be offended at all.

I don't get a kick out of offending people just for the heck of it. I don't mind using a different term than the one I grew up with. I don't mind being informed of the "correct" term to use or that the old term does indeed offend those who it is about. I do mind someone being offended by my 'innocent' use of a term when that person has no basis for being offended.

As though any of us needed to adopt things to be offended about. There is enough in the world which is really offensive to each of us.

This happened several years ago. But things like it happen all the time. People will find any excuse to judge and condemn others, even the excuse of acceptance and tolerance.
