The availability issue is not as easy as you might suspect. The technical explanation gets rather involved, but, suffice it to say that DRDRAM is a whole different technology with a completely different package (on the component level), completely different module type (on the module assembly level) and completely different testing requirements (on the component and module level) vs SDRAM. Whereas, SDRAM and EDO DRAM were only slightly different technologies, but were able to share the same packages, testers and module assembly lines. You may recall, that despite these small differences (SDRAM vs EDO DRAM) the migration was still rather difficult. Can you imagine how much more difficult it will be when you mix all these additional variables into the soup? Good luck!
