N R--- I am a Y2K Coordinator for a huge organization. Since 1993 we have spent a tremendous amount of money, a large percentage this FISCAL year. There will be finishing touches next FISCAL (begins Sept) year. Some things will not be effected until leap year and those will carry into Jan 2000. A part few think of is building systems and embedded chips. Nearly every business in the country (most individual facilities/installations) have a business continuity or contingency plan in place. Most also have recovery plans for the unforseen or uncontrollable happening. Most close to the situation feel there will be some things that were overlooked and by that nature will be small or inconsequencial. These are expected to be inconveniences not earth shattering problems Nearly all have had IS/IT spending impacted and all other business areas impacted by these costs with no ROI. Many purchases are expected to be made in the latter part of the year for installation during the early part of 2000. Lock downs are in place or soon to be in place. Nearly every company I have been in contact with indicate that Y2K is NOT an IS/IT problem but a mgmt problem or a business problem. Many of those working come from other than IS depts. Maintenance and operations people often go beyond the hardware and software and into the chips and integrated systems... there has been spending for CPUs replacing older models running HVAC and Security systems but those would have been bought for desktops and those desktops still need replacement. Many business are finishing FISCAL 1999 next month and new budgets are being assigned. Money NOT spent on recovery will be available for ALL dept spending inc IS/IT.
