Silicon Germanium is a new technology which has been around for a while but now IBM is pushing it big time for use in RF and Telecomm. applications. Since it is a Silicon based technology, levels of integration are much higher than GaAs and is cheaper.

Moreover this technology has just started emerging into commercial application so this is on the upward curve of a typical life-cycle curve for any technology. It will mature (like GaAs MESFET is today) and then unless it is improved will go on wane.
