SRAMs Emerging as Hot Item in World Memory Chip Mart July 20, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Due to rapidly expanding mobile telecommunications and Internet markets, static RAMs, a type of memory chip for mobile communication devices and Internet PCs, are emerging as hot items in the world memory chip market.
SRAMs, which come in 1Mb, 2Mb or 4Mb synchronous types, operate at 270-300 MHz.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. said it enjoyed sales of US$749 million worth of SRAMs in 1998, and expects sales profits to reach US$850 million in 1999.
"As SRAMs are high priced and have a relatively fixed price, we are enjoying lucrative profits," a Samsung official said.
Samsung, NEC Corp., Toshiba Corp. and IBM Corp. are currently the biggest players in the SRAM market, with Samsung leading the pack with 20.5 percent control of the market so far. The company expects to raise its market influence to 25 percent by year-end.
The SRAM market is expected to expand from US$4 billion this year to US$6 billion by the year 2001, and hit US$7 million by 2003.
