Hi JC - I have to agree with several of James points regarding the complexity of working with Solaras OS specifically the x-86 Solaris 2.7 version. Sunw will have to address this problem if they want to continue to expand the use of Solaris and make inroads into the Win NT market.

I have both Solaris x-86 2.7 and Win NT w/ svs pak 5. I have configured my NT to be a WEB server (I use Samba server for WIN NT) and also have it networked with two other PC's. The system has a 24/7 wireless internet connection (through Ricochet) that any of the networked PC's can access. The WEB server always runs in the back ground as a service and several other devises are connected to the NT machine SCII storage r/w CD ROM, scanner, laser printer etc.

I can dual boot NT or Solaris on the main server.... I have tried over the past six months to configure the Solaris OS with the same functions the Win NT machine has so I can measure overall system performance.

I have had many problems with the SUN Solaris product including: (1) obtaining devise drivers that work for different types of video boards I have, CD-ROM SCII devise drivers....etc. Configuring the Solaris OS to work with my Ricochet modem. Working with Solaris OS to update files (install patches), learning how to download files and install them correctly either from the SUN WEB site or other Vendor sites. I am finding that many vendors do not support Solaris OS but are now supporting Linux.

In order to upgrade any of my Solaris OS system files I must be able to connect to the internet and be able to download the appropriate devise drivers or better yet application programs (i.e. Netscape). It is much easier to obtain all the drivers I need for my NT machine and there are tons of application programs available for free download.

I am at the point where I am going to focus my time on LINUX rather than SOLARIS 2.7 as it is easier to locate the devise drivers I need for my equipment. Perhaps Sunw will eventually provide a look and feel windows based system (for free) or at a low cost that will allow me to duplicate my WIN NT functions on the Solaris x-86 platform.

Sunw's main market is in the high end server machines and that is why I continue to invest in Sunw stock. I would like SUNW to continue to work on making their OS easier to configure and use and a windows based interface (that works!) would be a good start. You should not have to be a rocket scientist to use the operating system to configure a browser and html web server.
