Apple Expected To Unveil Portable For Consumers

By Therese Poletti

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Steve Jobs, the interim chief executive of Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news), is expected to unveil a eye-catching portable computer for consumers when he takes the stage at the giant MacWorld Expo in New York Wednesday -- and he may have a few other surprises as well, analysts said.

In his keynote address to the Macintosh faithful, analysts said Jobs very likely would unveil a notebook computer designed for consumers -- a move that could shake up the portable market in the same way
that the iMac hit the desktop market last year.

Apple officials will not comment on any unannounced products.

''I would be astounded if they did not announce it,'' said Lou Mazzucchelli, an analyst with Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co. Mazzucchelli and other analysts said they expected the new Apple portable to be a notebook computer with a translucent casing like the iMac's.

''Think (of an) iMac that a steamroller has gone over and squished it flat -- a flat iMac,'' said Mazzucchelli. ''I believe they are shooting for $1,200. If they can get to that price point, they are going to sell a lot of these machines.''

The iMac, launched by Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple last year, is a sleek, curved Macintosh, with translucent casing, available in five different colors.

The success of the iMac has played a big role in Apple's resurgence, along with the streamlining of product lines and cost-cutting. Apple last week reported its seventh consecutive quarterly profit, with
earnings that beat expectations.

Since the iMac's launch, other PC makers have moved away from the standard beige box.

The new consumer portable is rumored to be called an iBook, combining the names of the iMac and Apple's popular PowerBook notebook line, which is targeted to business users. Not many portables are
designed for or targeted to consumers.

''Most consumers willing to buy into the PC vision have done so at the desktop,'' said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, a market research firm in Campbell, Calif.

''The design (of current notebooks) is by no means what you would consider a consumer design. They are very business looking. Apple could have a potential hit if they create something that has a very good industrial design.''

Apple may also announce an alliance with an Internet service provider or some other Internet-related deal. Such a move would come as other PC makers are announcing offers of either free Internet service or free computers with pre-paid Internet service.

''They certainly could do one, because they need to,'' said Mark Specker, a Soundview Technology Group analyst.

''This is a broad question in the industry right now ... whose brand will prevail in order to push sales of this stuff?'' Specker said. ''Will it be the PC makers who pull subscribers into the Internet or the Internet companies who subsidize PC costs? It goes along the lines of who has the best brand.''

Apple might also announce it was co-branding a version of a PalmPilot, the popular handheld computer developed by 3Com Corp.'s Palm Computing division, analysts said.

''All the rumors are plausible,'' said Mazzucchelli. ''It could be anything, anything could happen ... I do not think Apple is going to squander this opportunity.''

Apple stock has climbed to fresh highs in recent weeks, in anticipation of the company's second-quarter earnings and amid hopes for new products for MacWorld.

''Whatever they are going to do at the show, I guarantee that Steve will have something up his sleeve,'' said Bajarin.
