AMD needs a manufacturing partner.

What would they do with their big, expensive, leading-edge fab then? What AMD needs, IMO, is some engineers who know how to do design debug and/or isolate fabrication problems. And they'll only need them more as Athlon and 0.18-um ramp up. Manufacturing problems can bite anybody once, but the repeated problems AMD has had indicate they have a skill deficit in that area.
