Yes, there's a lot in translation. But a) a lot of it was reading for content, not language nuance, b) there were multiple translations of many of the works (such as Homer, Plato, Aristotle) as well as Loeb or other editions with both the original and the translation, and c) we had tutors who knew the works in the original who would tell us where the translations were good and bad. Plus we started learning Greek right off!

Not ideal, I agree, but better than just grabbing some translation off a shelf and hoping for the best.
