Hi stockforme - yes, you are quite right about China's track records on human right is far from acceptable. However, in this particular case, it is clearly that President Lee is the instigator. Mind you, most people who are remotely aware of the reunification talk understand it is a long protracted process. And I am even sympathetic to the Taiwan side. Certainly, her situation is quite different from that of HK or Macau. Therefore, it is fair that the negotiation is done on a equal footing. To reasonable individuals who have an inkling of the situation, President Lee's open musing is puzzling [if its sole purpose is addressing China.]

In term of who is pulling for whom, I don't know. My guess is that most people don't care so long as they are not affected. I don't mean people are amoral. Quite on the contrary, I believe most people, regardless of color and race, have a moral core. However, I also think most of them are smart enough to judge based on the circumstances.
