In my experience, the right claims that the media has a left-wing bias, while the left claims that it has a right-wing bias. How journalists vote themselves is a relevant question, but not overwhelmingly decisive, since only the most ideological of reporters would be more interested in shaping the public's interests than in having a story that attracts it. Also I'm wary of some of assumptions and methodology of such studies, especially how they decide which candidates are 'liberal' vs. 'conservative'. Any approach that uses party lines would have obvious weaknesses. Or if some litmus test is used, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the (say) NYC candidates, Republican and Democratic, might be classified as 'liberal', while in some rural areas, both might be 'conservative'. The concentration of media in NYC, and its absence from rural areas, then comes into play.
