Yes JC - I agree with your statements BUT if SUNW is going to compete with WIN NT, they need to develop a more friendly SOLARIS OS. They will eventually get around to doing this if they feel this is an important market to develop. SUNW has limited resources and will continue to focus on the high end servers and develop their OS to function for this environment.

However, SUNW needs to address this sector of the market (in a fast track mode) so that users like you (and me) can easily install and configure the software for WEB and internet uses. Remember, it is the small to medium size users that will implement an OS that is easy to use and is reliable. SUNW will grow their overall user base if they can deliver an OS that can compete with WIN NT.

When the Jini devises emerge and the OS is as simple as WIN NT, SUNW will dominate this sector of the market. When this is accomplished SUNW can move these new users to the new 64-bit platform with Merced or SPARC boxes. This is a huge market opportunity for SUNW and from my perspective a very important goal for SUNW to achieve if they are going to meet their growth targets for 2001.

Otherwise, SUNW will always be constrained to sell to the professional network administrator which will limit the end-user use of Sunw's products. Project Cascade is certainly a start, but it is far too expensive for the small to medium size developer to utilize when WIN NT offers everything NOW! As you and I know, these users do not care about the "...Faustian bargain at the expense of configurability, reliability, scalability, and openness..." when they can get results now. It's only when their systems crash and the house of cards comes rolling down....they will look to SUNW's solution.....but run into the configuration problems etc. again...

The door is open for SUNW to deliver an affordable solution that the industry will follow if an easy end-user workable OS is provided.
