johnd, Good logical approach.
A part of my defensive has to do with having a very good run with my calls options and a need to take a breather. It is sort of a natural need to preserve capital after gains that were incredible. However, this is about as bearish i have ever felt.
Through all the old selloffs (Asia, Brazil, etc) i remained positive but now i am just too uncertain and to me that is a sign to cut back (using the same logic as you).
I am playing the short side temporarily---if i make some gains i would go in cash waiting for the next great opportunity (long).
