Probably if you go back just before the earlier of the last two semiconductor business crashes (1995-1996?), when most semiconductors were in short supply, especially memories, there was a huge amount of multiple ordering and a massive customer inventory buildup. This resulted in huge quarters which were followed by three flat quarters to burn off the inventory. This is from memory, so may not be correct in detail.
