Hutch - The US cannot do so b/c she is upholding the one China policy. While some people have been taking potshot at President Clinton, the seed has been sown long before him. I do not know enough the Israel issue, but obviously, there is only one Israel. And in truth, I suspect the KMT [President Lee's party, even though he is a taiwanese [vs a mainlander]] has no desire to form a nation of Taiwan.

A bit of personal observation may be in order here. I did crosspath with many Chinese from Taiwan of the cold war generation. They did consider threcentemselves the heir of the China by calling the communist Chinese "Kun Fei" [literally "Communist bandits".] So, from the disinterested bystander's POV, indocrination were mutual.

Recently though, there are a lot of Taiwanese investment in mainland China.

best, Bosco
