U.S. State Dept to buy Motorola<MOT.N> cell phones

NEW YORK, July 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department placed an order to buy 1,000 mobile phones and accessories valued for $1.4 million from Motorola <MOT.N>, a top U.S. provider of wireless communication systems, the company said Tuesday.

The U.S. government plans to use the equipment with Iridium LLC, a global satellite phone and paging company, to expand their communications capability and enhance security abroad.

The State Department maintains about 260 diplomatic and consular posts that also provide the necessary infrastructure for about 30 other U.S. government agencies.

Motorola said it will provide its customers any type of telephone transmission -- voice, paging, data and fax -- to reach its destination virtually anywhere on the planet.
