For San Francisco area fun try the Russian River outfitters.
Nice 2 mph water, shallow, (you may have to walk some of it).
Look for the Gold Placer, (protected by a armed guard), has a
steam shovel on a small islet in the river.

Dig where your canoe get's caught on a berm, and you might
find gold nuggets.....REALLY.....
