Lola--I did wear braces as a child.
I found them pretty painful. I remember too that my teeth seemed to straighten out right away but the dentist left them on for a long period after saying I had a lot of root movement to do. It was bad enough with teeth but the thought of root movement for this area is appalling.
This is one time being normal is certainly a good thing. I can only offer loads of sympathy for the afflicted, and still more for any who receive the benefits of your medieval though certainly creative ideas.
