- ASM Lithography NV (ASML) said Tuesday that net profit in the first
half dropped sharply, as the effects of the slump in the
semiconductor industry hit results.

- The results were better-than-expected; analysts had projected
earnings between a loss of EUR2.2 million and a net profit of EUR1.9
million.

- ASML said the profit level in 1999 should be at the same level as
in 1998, when profit came in at EUR136.6 million.

- The company, which makes semiconductor equipment, had said earlier
that 1999 profit was expected to come in below 1998 levels.

- The order book as of June 30 stood at EUR616 million, compared with
EUR289 million at the end of 1998.

- ASML's market share dropped slightly to 29% as of July 1999 from
30% in 1998.

- Gross margins fell to 28% in the first half of 1999 from 42.8% in
the same period in 1998.

- Margins were pressured by extra costs due to sales of new systems
and high introduction costs from more advanced systems.

- ASML Chairman Willem Maris said the semiconductor market was busy
recovering after the slump and said ASML expects to increase its
market share as the sector recovers.

- "We expect a gradual improvement in margins and a good second
half," Maris said.
