New Internet software
alliance gets brand name
iPlanet
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The alliance between two of the largest
Internet players in the world, Sun Microsystems and America
Online Inc., announced today that its brand name will be iPlanet.
Just 100 days after its launch, the group's president, Mark Tolliver,
said the alliance now has more than 300 customers, all of them
companies doing business online. He said the brand name will help
customers identify their products.
Sun and AOL began their joint effort earlier this year, after AOL bought Netscape
Communications. The Alliance had been nicknamed the ''dot com'' software company. It is aimed
at giving companies tools, software, and services to take their businesses online.
Company officials would not release initial revenues, but said they want to become ''the industry's
first $1 billion pure play Internet software company.'' |
