<..MP3.COM will succeed or fail on their ability to create a portal that provides value to their intended audience..> agreed, but unlike well known portals like Yahoo or AMZN, these very niche guys have only been out in front of their firewall ~8-10 months (I believe, and I've been waiting to hear back from their IR person who has been onboard all of 2 days). It all goes to the outrageous internet valuations - early indication is an opening of >$60 (on ~66M shares outstanding - fully diluted) values this mp3 portal at ~$4B. Most people chasing this thing don't have a CLUE about mp3 (or MP3.com's place in the "field"). And this just after Jupiter reports that only $147M in online music sales (across ALL formats) will have transpired by 2003.
