Calls to the company's Las Vegas headquarters today were greeted by a recording explaining its voice mail was full.
Jules Levin, executive director of the National AIDS Treatment Advocacy Project, which runs HIV treatment and education programs in minority communities in the New York City area, criticized the company's announcement.
``Any self-respecting researcher who has something that might help people with HIV should present it at a peer-reviewed medical meeting,' he said. ``I think they should be investigated for securities fraud.'
Testimonials
Letters from five patients allegedly treated with Plasma Plus were posted on Uniprime's Web site late yesterday. They were added to a section with auto salesmen's testimonials.
``I feel totally healed,' wrote Alfonso Valentin Salto Sanchez in a letter in Spanish and English.
Uniprime said it ``received documentation from the government of Spain verifying the authenticity of the patients who have been treated' with Plasma Plus.
The company, which owns auto dealerships in Rochester, New York, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, said it wouldn't release the documentation before getting a patent on Plasma Plus.
``Some people are going to think there is something to this and maybe try to take this and stop taking their medicines,' said Levin. ``It's very irresponsible.'
