Very interesting article.

I am reminded of a comment by my English guide during one of my visits to Windsor castle. He had a simple explanation for how the British Empire (where the sun never sets) came into being: The British, he said, went thought a period of "great energy" that outlasted many of the other European powers of their time - they were also "opportunists", in his view.

If we take a modern day analogy, I wonder which country/system today is going through a period of "great energy" and will come to dominate the world scene, not territorially, of course, because the game has changed.
