SilkRoad Introduces First Commercial Application of SilkRoad Refractive
Synchronization Communication (SRSC™) Single Wavelength Technology

Versatile product for simply and cost-effectively increasing bandwidth on
Enterprise networks

SAN DIEGO, July 21, 1999 - SilkRoad, Inc., an innovative optical networking
technology company, today announced the introduction of its Emissary 1000™
optical transceiver product line for Enterprise networks.

The Emissary 1000 is the first commercial application of SilkRoad's
Refractive Synchronization Communication (SRSC™) technology. SRSC™, based
on new applications of well-established principles of optical physics,
allows a properly modulated single wavelength laser beam to carry multiple
electronic signals. As a result, SRSC™ based systems provide significant
benefits for high speed, high volume, voice, video and data communications
that extend beyond those achieved through conventional multiple wavelength
technologies.

The Emissary 1000 product line provides bi-directional performance on a
single wavelength on a single fiber. Spans of up to 500 km are possible
before remodulation of the signal, and the system allows for simple
add/drop of any and all signals along the span. The simple design of a
single laser, single wavelength system supports higher bandwidth
transmission, at less cost, than current technologies such as DWDM. The
capability of long spans and the ability to handle the mixing of standard
and non-standard signals and protocols means greater versatility for the
customer.

The Emissary 1000 product line is currently in field testing with customers
and is expected to be commercially available in the first quarter of 2000.
Pricing is not yet established.

"SilkRoad has developed a revolutionary way to expand bandwidth that is
cost-effective, efficient, and easily applied to commercial purposes," said
Kevin C. Doria, SilkRoad President and CEO. "The development of SRSC™
technology has led us to numerous testing and sales opportunities for
increasing bandwidth in fiber optic networks. With the Emissary 1000
product line, we offer a new standard for bandwidth value and versatility
for Enterprise applications."

The entry-level product in the Emissary 1000 product line is the Emissary
1200™ optical transceiver, providing up to four mixed-technology (OC-3,
OC-12, Digital Video, and Digital Data in either standard or proprietary
protocols) or one OC-48 channel per network element.

SilkRoad also plans to offer the Emissary 1400™ optical transceiver
providing up to eight mixed-technology or two OC-48 channels per network
element, and the Emissary 1600™ optical transceiver providing up to sixteen
mixed-technology or four OC-48 channels per network element.

"The Emissary 1000 product line answers a large demand in our customer base
to be able to handle massive communication needs between multiple sites,"
said Herb Stover, SilkRoad Director of Sales. "Our first introduction of
this product line will facilitate large file transfers and real time
interactive data and video communications."

Potential customers for Emissary products include Fortune 1000 companies,
government, universities, and the medical, imaging and utility markets.
Emissary products provide network solutions by allowing transmission of
real time video; handling large file transfers; increasing network speed
and capacity; and supporting a variety of network security methods.

Emissary can also add value to any organization whose network is suffering
from fiber exhaust or the cost of long distance point-to-point
communications.
Founded in 1996, SilkRoad, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered
in San Diego, where sales and marketing, research and development,
engineering and administration are located. The company's patented SilkRoad
Refractive Synchronization Communication (SRSC™) single wavelength
technology provides the basis for next-generation communications systems
that dramatically increase bandwidth, accessibility to information,
scalability and network simplicity. SRSC™ technology provides products for
telecommunications, CATV and Enterprise markets for long haul, metro,
access and local networks.SRSC™ received a SUPERQuest Award for the "Most
Promising New Technology," in optical networking, introduced at SUPERCOMM
'99.
