Hi Joe D: The Visigenic's license deal is quite intereting...

From the article..

"...Today's announcement strengthens the industry adoption of CORBA, the Object Management Group's Common Object Request Broker Architecture specification, and its ORB interoperability protocol, the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP), for distributed object computing. Novell joins an impressive list of premier companies that have embraced Visigenic's CORBA and IIOP implementations including Netscape, Oracle, Borland and others. The common objective driving this show of force is the vision that standard languages and protocols will be used to build and deploy mission-critical applications in legacy, enterprise and networked environments. ..."

The move to CORBA standards is much faster than I expected and it appears that the momentum is growing too. Once that critial mass is achieved, MS will have to fall in line with several of these other companies and utilize the same standards.

IMO, if this occurs, Novell will be on a level playing field with 'home field advantage'. If the move to JAVA enabled customer applications and distributed object computing is accomplished in 1997, 1998-2000 opportunities for excelerated growth look real good.
