Re: Lucent Launches Wireless WDM System Prototype

Hi Frank and Threaders,

Excellent coverage of LuLU's new optical last mile solution.

But is there a market for this amount of bandwidth at the LAN level? Galuppo thinks so. "Clearly we're anticipating the demand as more and more locations are going to 100-based T workstation rate," he says. "We're looking at switches with direct OC-48 [2.5 Gbit/s] going out today." The product will be available with a Gigabit Ethernet
interface by the summer of 2000, and Lucent is considering other interfaces, as well.

Lucent already has a buyer ready to test the technology, with startup carrier Global Crossing preparing to begin field trials of the system in December 1999. "If our testing of the product meets expectations, it could offer a breakthrough method to help our
global customers bypass local bottlenecks,” says Global Crossing senior vice president Wally Dawson. “Based on projections, no one else is even approaching the amount of bandwidth that Lucent will bring to this market."

I will post this to the LU thread as well.

Ciao, Ray
