It seems to have provoked some bi-partisan PRO-Taiwanese sentiment in the House:

Washington, July 20 (CNA) Seven members of the US House of Representatives have jointly introduced an amendment bill asking President Bill Clinton to demand that mainland China renounce the use of force against Taiwan.
The amendment bill, introduced on July 19 while the House was discussing a security bill related to US embassies, also demanded that the US government extend its support to Taiwan when the island faces military threats from mainland China.

The amendment bill, which was passed with a unanimous vote, was introduced amid recent controversy over Republic of China President Lee Teng-hui's definition of relations across the Taiwan Strait as "a special state-to-state relationship." The seven House members who jointly initiated the bill included David Wu (D-Ore.), Robert E. Andrews (D-N.J.), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), Peter Deutsch (D-Fla.), Michael R. McNulty (D-N.Y.), and Michael Bilirakis (R-Fla.).
