Hi Larry & all, Larry, you postscripted "P.S. Bosco figures in here, with his suggestion that US acceptance of "one China" was a Jimmy Carter invention. I disagree, and so, apparently, does WSJ. Clinton has gone much further down that path than has any prior US president."
I think we can disagree. However, a bit of semantics [for my own benefits <g>] may be in order. I did not say or even imply President Carter invented "One China." Ok, maybe you are employing poetic license - and that's ok too. If one is to read my post as a whole, I am suggesting the present predicament is as inevitable as the water seeking the flow down stream on the face of gravity. Once the world, UN being the proxy, admitted CCCP and sent Taiwan away, where the 5 Stars flag replaced the "clear sky, bright day and redness all over," the conclusion has been fore-ordained. Even the champion of anti-communism, President Reagan, could not turn the clock back.
If memory serves [I could be wrong,] the defense treaty with Taiwan was put in place by the Congress of the Carter era as a safeguard/compromise.
As far as WSJ is concerned, citing it against President Clinton is as good as citing The Nation for President Clinton. Again, this is personal opinion, my observation is based on the many years of watching Mr Paul Gigot on the News Hour. Personally, I think the best way to convince others is to use other people's point of reference, and not one's own. But I ve digressed <g>
Anyway, it's good that we can discuss the issues from our different POVs without going overboard
best, Bosco |
