I don't see any reason for this split... did we dispel the myth (or fact) that Amzn needed to keep the share price up to avoid interest payments

I see the reason, Amazon is trying to keep the price floor for the next three months. Split is one of his cards. The bond conversion's ceiling and floor will be adjusted accordingly; such as 156/2=78 as the convertible price and 236/2=118 as the auto-exec. top ceiling.
